History
FACLC was born out of necessity and driven by an unwavering commitment to fairness. In 1985, our founders, Bonnie Hough, Judge Verna A. Adams, and Ann Diamond recognized a troubling reality: women, particularly those in vulnerable situations, faced significant barriers in accessing legal support, especially in family law matters. Many were left without the resources to protect themselves or their children, especially in cases of domestic violence. FACLC emerged as a powerful response, ensuring that no one would be forced to navigate these critical legal battles alone simply because they couldn’t afford representation.
What began as the Family Law Center has since evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of our community. In 2003, we broadened our mission and became The Family & Children's Law Center, reflecting our deepened commitment to serving children as well as families in crisis. Today, we provide high-quality, low-cost legal services covering domestic violence protection, child custody and support, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status predicate orders. Our work ensures that children can grow up in safe and stable environments and that families, in all their forms, receive the support they need to build a better future.
Over the years, our clients' needs have grown more complex. Many face daunting legal battles involving custody disputes where mental health and substance abuse challenges are at play. Others struggle with financial control from abusive partners or intricate legal matters like pension division. Yet, no matter how difficult the case, our commitment remains steadfast: we stand by those who need us most.
At FACLC, we don’t just offer legal assistance, we offer hope. We advocate for the voiceless, fight for the vulnerable, and help families rewrite their futures. Because justice should never be out of reach.
